Who can use the service?
Women, their partners and significant others who find themselves facing an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy may contact the service.
If women are needing an abortion, it is available for women up to approximately 22 weeks pregnant. It is provided FREE of charge.
What If I am under 16 years of age?
The Centre can provide a confidential service. If you would like more information, please phone the Centre, on 8243 3999 or email the Centre’s social worker.
How early, or late in the pregnancy can I have an abortion?
Abortions can be done as early as six weeks into the pregnancy and up to approximately 22 weeks. Pregnancy weeks are counted from the date of the last period, not from the date of conception. Most women have the abortion as early in the pregnancy as possible, however for many good reasons, this is not always possible.
How long will I have to wait?
The waiting time for an appointment is usually less than two weeks. However, if you suspect the pregnancy is over twelve weeks you should advise Centre staff. When you contact the Centre you will be given the most appropriate appointment to meet your needs.
How long will I be at the Centre?
The clinic consultation process may take up to two hours. On the day of the abortion, if you are having the operation on the same day as the clinic consultation, expect to be at the Centre for up to five hours. The operation and recovery time may take up to two hours. There is likely to be some waiting time in between.
What about confidentiality?
Services are provided confidentially, except in circumstances where there is a legal obligation to report information. All staff are bound to keep client confidentiality. Information kept by the Centre is not available to people outside the Centre without your consent. You are also allowed see your case notes kept by the Centre. A fee many be charged for your application under the Freedom of Information Act (1991).
Do I need to participate in counselling?
When faced with unplanned pregnancy the decision for some women is clear. For others, however, the way to proceed may not be so straightforward. If you wish, counselling by experienced social workers can assist you to explore your options and, if appropriate, to plan decision-making strategies without offering advice or judgment.
Post-abortion counselling is also available – whether or not the abortion was done at the Centre and regardless of when it was done. Phone counselling is available.
