The Clinic Consultation

The Clinic ConsultationDuring the clinic consultation a health worker will speak with you to:

  • Talk with you about your decision;
  • Explain the procedure;
  • Explain the possible risks of abortion;
  • Provide you with information for your care after the procedure;
  • Answer any questions you may have; and
  • Provide you with information about contraception, if required.

Initially women are seen by themselves, but a support person may join you in the clinic consultation at your request.

If you want counselling, or if the health worker feels counselling will be helpful, it will be offered. Counselling is provided by qualified social workers. You will be contacted as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours of requesting counselling by one of the counsellors, who will discuss your needs with you and make the most appropriate appointment to meet your needs.

Counselling times can vary depending on your needs, but counsellors, will generally set aside an hour. Counselling can be provided face-to-face or over the phone.

Soon after speaking with the health worker, a doctor will meet with you to:

  • Talk with you about your decision;
  • Confirm how many weeks pregnant you are, by doing an ultrasound;
  • Check your medical history;
  • Explain the possible risks of abortion;
  • Answer any questions you have; and
  • Obtain consent for the operation;
